How a Vision for Financial Inclusion Led to Columbia Business School

Background

A tiger conservation advocate, peer mentor, and self-taught investor who has grown his equity portfolio 40 times in three years, KB has consistently demonstrated purpose, impact, and vision personally and professionally. From fundraising for forest rangers and supporting academic communities to building credit products for US banks and AI-driven risk models for Indian institutions, his work reflects a drive to create meaningful change.

Motivated by his grandfather’s challenges in securing capital and friends being denied education loans, KB chose a career in analytics and risk to transform financial systems and develop next-gen lending tools. Committed to expanding access to capital for underserved communities, he returned to India to work in debt portfolio management and credit scoring for Indian banks. This role deepened his understanding of emerging credit markets and strengthened his ability to design scalable, inclusive financial solutions. He wanted to pursue an MBA to fulfil his long-term vision of facilitating financial inclusion.

KB’s main challenge was turning a broad and varied profile, spanning conservation, finance, and personal investing, into a focused, purpose-driven narrative with clear post-MBA goals.

Approach

We helped KB connect his family’s entrepreneurial journey to his own goals in inclusive finance. We supported him in clearly expressing this legacy and the purpose behind his career choices. Together, we identified Columbia Business School as a strong fit and explored how its finance curriculum, FinTech ecosystem, and innovation-driven culture aligned with his vision. We also guided him in defining his motivations, highlighting the strategic intent behind his decisions, and showing how he was prepared to transform traditional lending models.

Key Takeaway

Through reflection and in-depth research, KB highlighted how he has leveraged every academic, professional, and personal opportunity to prepare himself for the complex challenge of financial inclusion. He showcased how his journey reflects strategic decision-making, analytical depth, and a strong sense of social purpose, making Columbia Business School the right-fit program to help him amplify his impact.
