From Citibank to Wharton: A Journey of Financial Empowerment and Global Ambitions
Background
A finance enthusiast from a small town in India, AJ set his sights on an MBA from a leading business school in the USA. He supplemented his engineering degree with a CFA certification, demonstrating his deep interest in building a career in finance. However, as an Indian male engineer from a reputed Indian Institute with a fast-growing career trajectory in finance at Citibank, AJ was an overrepresented profile in the international applicant pool to the M7 schools. Our main challenge was developing a strategy to differentiate his profile in this pool.
AJ consistently deepened his understanding of how Indians invest their savings, whether large conglomerates or small-time individual investors in rural India. He joined WhatsApp groups discussing financial markets and investments. He contributed to grassroots-level efforts to improve financial literacy across rural communities of India, conducting knowledge sessions and workshops to promote money management and digital banking. At Citibank, AJ worked with the firm’s UK teams and managed Foreign Exchange and Interest Rate Risk Management for international MNCs. AJ wanted to build on his international work experience and fast-tracked promotions, to move up the ladder and build a meaningful career by gaining a holistic perspective and a global cohort at a top-ranked business program.
Approach
AJ’s enthusiastic contribution towards uplifting socio-economically disadvantaged communities and building financially secure futures, combined with his deep knowledge of finance, was central to his narrative. We helped him reflect on early influences from growing up in small towns and watching his family of educators work tirelessly on building literacy programs and convince marginalized populations of the power of education. He also looked beyond his professional experiences to map out the conventional ways he had observed his family and extended personal network approach wealth building. By connecting personal observations and professional skills acquired through his qualifications and sustained interactions with global organizations, he identified gaps in conventional investments.
We helped him draw out experiences and learnings from his involvement in financial literacy initiatives to map out his entrepreneurial passion in scaling this work. With this approach, AJ could map out his life journey in a profoundly personal manner and go beyond conventional goals to build a differentiated perspective that was reflected in his essays. His constant entrepreneurial drive to work for the betterment of society rang true to his efforts to deepen his knowledge and his continued engagement with financial literacy initiatives while working in a demanding role at Citibank. This authentic pitch helped him secure a spot at his dream business school – Wharton Business School.
Key Takeaway
Initially, AJ took a very technical approach to applications, considering decisions and motivations only in black and white. Our guidance helped him connect the dots between different phases and facets of his life to identify key transitions between his personal and professional paths. This helped him clarify his long-term goals and devise a plan of action during and after his MBA at Wharton.
