Transforming Healthcare: The Journey from Punjab to Yale School of Management

Background

HS grew up in small-town India, where he witnessed the challenges faced by middle-class families in accessing treatment for life-threatening illnesses. These experiences profoundly influenced his ambition to devise a solution to these issues. He distinguished himself with his drive to succeed and dedication to creating access to critical medical care.

Though he completed an engineering degree from a local institute and worked with smaller, mission-focused firms instead of larger conglomerates, HS remained true to his mission. He understood the complexities of the Indian healthcare ecosystem through business development, sales, and strategy roles.

He developed a deep interest in alternative solutions, such as medical crowdfunding, to help individuals who could not afford care for rare diseases or were dealing with long-standing medical expenses. His interest led him to join India’s only company dedicated to this endeavor. His professional experiences opened his eyes to the challenges ordinary individuals face when overwhelmed by unfamiliar expenses. He learned how creating greater awareness and raising public consciousness around possible financial support could transform patients’ lives.

HS saw himself building a career to gain insights into healthcare technology advancements and access to healthcare across a broad spectrum of medical conditions. In the long term, he envisioned becoming an entrepreneur, providing individuals with financial products and services to manage chronic conditions.

Approach

HS researched schools that would offer him resources to build a post-MBA career in Consulting within the healthcare domain. We assisted him in clarifying his goals, focusing his commitment on understanding healthcare access and leveraging school resources and exposure to achieve his short- and long-term objectives. HS researched each school thoroughly by speaking with 20-30 student ambassadors and alumni, building a comprehensive view of his future.

He drew on his understanding of healthcare access issues and described how his business school experience would enhance his knowledge of new innovations and technologies. This would help his ambition to improve access to healthcare and financing. His goal was to create a sustainable business centered on crowdfunding, innovative health insurance, and lending to make healthcare more affordable in India.

Key Takeaway

We assisted HS in connecting his initial interest in healthcare with his background in medical funding. This allowed us to create a compelling story that linked his goals with his passion for this field. His thoughtful consideration of how an MBA could enhance his understanding of healthcare financing and his focus on addressing financial challenges for patients and caregivers set him apart in his school research. He identified schools that could provide the resources needed to achieve his vision.

His pitch was genuine and strategic, reflecting thorough research. He effectively articulated his current perspective, identified knowledge gaps, and linked them to his post-MBA goals, making logical connections between all three elements.

We learned that thorough school research demonstrates an applicant’s drive and ambition to make a meaningful impact. It’s crucial that this research connects to specific goals and learning requirements rather than just listing classes, faculty, clubs, and projects. On the other hand, HS learned to look beyond school rankings to identify schools aligned with his goals. This enabled him to present a strong case for his candidacy to a receptive audience. He was admitted to Yale SOM, the school of his dreams.
